BLOG: Falling For Online Scams

A few months ago, I nearly fell for a sophisticated social media scam promising a free tech gadget giveaway from a brand I followed. The post appeared legitimate with a verified account and high-quality visuals, leading me to click the link in the bio. The link directed me to a convincing fake website asking for personal details and even credit card information for “shipping costs.” Luckily, I realized something was off before entering any payment details. This scam’s main goal was to steal personal and financial data, using urgency and psychological manipulation to trick people into acting without thinking.

Reflecting on this experience, I learned several ways to spot such scams. First, always verify the source by checking official websites or social media profiles, as legitimate giveaways are well-publicized across platforms. Be cautious of red flags like poor grammar or requests for payment on “free” items. Additionally, taking time to evaluate the offer and using tools like reverse image search or security apps can help protect against fraud. Being skeptical and informed about these tactics is essential in protecting ourselves from digital deception.
